The Government Council of the Canary Islands has approved the declaration of the award of works for the completion of the multipurpose building of the Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Lanzarote, with a total investment of 966,000 euros. Of this amount, more than 775,500 euros will be allocated to the execution tasks, which will have a seven-month deadline, while 191,000 euros will be assigned to the drafting of the project and the technical direction of the works.
The works, awarded to the company Lanzagrava, will allow for the conditioning of the facilities to facilitate the planned transfer of staff and users from the Insular Hospital. According to the official version, this measure aims to maintain the geriatric model of Lanzarote, considered a benchmark. The initiative involves the closure of a significant part of the current building, which has been in service for 75 years, despite a recent protest against it with approximately 7,000 participants.
This relocation responds to the priority of guaranteeing the safety and quality of care for both patients and health professionals, given the structural deficiencies of the Insular Hospital that advise against maintaining activity in its current facilities. The new building is expected to be ready by 2027 and will help expand the healthcare capacity of the primary health center.
A technical report from the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), through the Infrastructure Service, confirms the need for prior works before the transfer to ensure the adequate use of the property. The multipurpose building, constructed urgently during the covid-19 pandemic, will have a new general use and is located near the Emergency area. Decisions on the reform of the Insular Hospital, its budget, and the timeline for the works are still pending.
