The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has issued an alert to Civil Protection of the Government of the Canary Islands after observing an increase in the frequency of seismic activity beneath Tenerife. Specifically, 221 low-frequency events have been recorded in the last 48 hours near Las Cañadas del Teide, an area that has shown anomalous activity in previous months.
These events intensified from Saturday night into Sunday morning and, notably, during the early hours of Sunday to Monday. The IGN sent the alert to Civil Protection at 2:07 AM, following established protocols. Sources from the IGN told EFE that such alerts have been issued before, though they were not publicly disclosed.
During this period of increased activity, ordinary volcano-tectonic events, hybrid events, and LP events have been identified, all showing a strong correlation since Saturday afternoon. Despite the number of events, none have been felt by the population. The previous week, between Thursday and Friday, 79 earthquakes were already registered in the same location.
The detected seismic events are of magnitudes less than 2 MbLg, with epicenters mostly located in the western area of Las Cañadas, encompassing municipalities such as Guía de Isora, Vilaflor de Fasnia, and Santiago del Teide. Depths are predominantly between 10 and 15 kilometers below sea level.
The IGN emphasizes that this activity is comparable to that observed in February and March of last year. It also clarifies that the figures for events, magnitudes, and depths are provisional due to the low amplitude of the analyzed signals. A more detailed analysis could increase the event count and refine the ranges in the official catalog.
