The regional executive, formed by Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular, has positively assessed the initiative by the Council of Ministers, which aims to ensure the permanent nature of public housing and combat speculation. A spokesperson for the Public Works, Housing, and Mobility department emphasized the importance of social housing not being privatized or patrimonialized.
This stance, however, contrasts with that of its government partner, the Partido Popular, which has expressed its intention to boycott the plan in other autonomous communities where it governs. The Canarian spokesperson insisted on the need to protect the inalienable nature of public housing, recalling that the community already legislated in this regard in 2024, prohibiting the sale of public housing on the free market.
“"This has seen little participation from the autonomous communities."
Despite supporting the main objective, the Government of the Canary Islands is not satisfied with the plan's funding model, which amounts to 7 billion euros. Autonomous communities must contribute 40% of the funds, while the State covers the remaining 60%. The spokesperson criticized the limited participation of the autonomies in drafting the plan, noting that the final content was not known until the day of its approval.
Furthermore, there is disagreement with the allocation of 371 million euros for the Canary Islands, as the distribution criteria are based on adjusted population data and socioeconomic variables considered outdated, some dating back to 1991. According to the department's calculations, with updated data, the region could receive up to 500 million euros, representing a significant difference.
