The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning for a start to the week characterized by summer-like conditions unusual for May. While the mainland is affected by a DANA, the islands remain under the influence of high pressure systems that are driving a warm air mass from Africa.
The temperature spike will be particularly significant in inland areas and mid-altitudes. In Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, thermometers could exceed 34 degrees, with peaks of up to 37 degrees expected during the central hours of the day. In Tenerife, the southern slopes will also experience high values, exceeding 34 degrees in localized spots.
In addition to the heat, calima (suspended dust) will be a key factor over the coming hours. The dust will affect the entire autonomous community, being denser in the eastern islands and reducing visibility in the mid-altitudes and peaks of the western islands. Winds are expected to blow from the north with moderate intensity, providing slight relief in coastal areas.
Given this situation, authorities recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure between 11:00 and 16:00, staying hydrated, and exercising caution while driving due to reduced visibility caused by the dust.
