A recent report from a pioneering surprise travel company has revealed that several islands in the Canary archipelago are among the most discarded destinations by Spanish travelers.

The company Waynabox, known for its surprise travel model, has published a study analyzing the preferences of Spanish travelers. The results show an unexpected trend: a significant portion of users choose to exclude national destinations from their options, placing several Canary Islands prominently in the discard ranking.
Among the fifteen destinations offered for the “Surprise Island” experience, Gran Canaria ranks as the fourth most rejected island globally, with 10.4% of exclusions. Tenerife also appears on this list, holding the seventh position with 9% of discards by users who prefer to avoid it as an unknown destination.
Other islands in the archipelago also feature in the list, albeit with lower rejection percentages. Lanzarote records 5% of discards, while Fuerteventura shows one of the highest acceptance rates, with only 3.2% of exclusions.

"There is a tendency to undervalue what is ours, despite Spanish beaches being among the best in Europe."

The report highlights a general disinterest in national tourism products, as three out of four Spanish travelers remove a Spanish island from their selection. This phenomenon particularly affects the Balearic Islands, with Mallorca (19.9%) and Ibiza (17.3%) leading the ranking of destinations that Spaniards “no longer want to visit” under this modality. In contrast, Greece solidifies its position as the favorite destination, with less than 5% of discards for its islands.
