Education in the Archipelago has undergone an unprecedented structural transformation, raising the educational standard to cutting-edge levels. The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands has published a list of centers that are consolidating as absolute benchmarks in pedagogical quality and child protection for the current school year.
This selection not only rewards pure academic performance but also certifies a paradigm shift where emotional health, psychological well-being, and the safety of the school environment are central to the teaching strategy, placing public education in the Canary Islands in the spotlight of the national educational community.
On June 16th, La Gomera will host the institutional gala for the presentation of the Educational Excellence Awards for the 2025-2026 academic year. The event, presided over by the regional minister, Poli Suárez, will bring together official delegations from the eleven selected centers from six different islands.
The awarded methodologies share a common, highly disruptive trait: they drastically move away from the memorization of the old system and address disciplines critical for the development of contemporary society, including manipulative mathematical reasoning, intensive language immersion, digital coexistence with a strict ethical perspective, affective-sexual health care, and active protection of the Canary Islands' historical and cultural heritage.
The IES Benito Pérez Armas has captured expert attention for its impeccable model of Coexistence, Well-being, and Student Protection, making the mental health and emotional safety of its students an absolute and transversal priority, shared unanimously by the entire educational community.
The center's strategy is based on three unwavering pillars: active listening, personalized support, and early prevention of conflicts or vulnerable situations. Its dynamic design aims for direct social impact: effectively ensuring no student feels alone or helpless when facing academic, family, or personal difficulties.
The eleven awarded centers across six participating islands demonstrate that social equity and educational quality are achievable within the public system. The institutional recognition, to be formalized in La Gomera in mid-June, is the starting point for a successful pedagogical model that the Ministry of Education plans to progressively implement throughout the region's school map in the coming academic years.
