Carlos Enrique Viña Romero was sworn in this Friday as the new president of the Canary Islands Bar Associations Council, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Illustrious Bar Association of Las Palmas. The dean of the Lanzarote Bar Association succeeds Juan Antonio Rodríguez Rodríguez, who led the institution for the past term.
In his speech, Viña Romero advocated for the essential role of the legal profession in society and the rule of law, highlighting its importance in guaranteeing the right to defense, legal certainty, and access to justice. He emphasized the significance of legal professionals, especially in a context of legislative and organizational changes in the judicial field.
Additionally, María del Pilar Rodríguez Martín was elected as the treasurer of the Council. Viña Romero acknowledged the work of professionals in free legal aid and the public defender system, underscoring their contribution to assisting vulnerable groups and their relevance as a guarantee of the democratic system. He expressed the Council's commitment to continue collaborating with public administrations to improve the resources and conditions for this service.
The new president also addressed the demands of mutual insurance members, expressing satisfaction with recent legislative advancements regarding alternative mutualities. He advocated for promoting initiatives to achieve a more agile, efficient, and citizen-friendly justice system. He committed to strengthening collaboration among the four Canary Islands bar associations and maintaining the Council's role as a guarantor of fundamental rights and legal certainty. Challenges include providing legal support in migratory processes and backing professionals working in this area.
The ceremony concluded with an institutional gathering attended by representatives of the Canary Islands legal profession, judicial authorities, and public administration officials.
