In his speech for May 30th, Clavijo emphasized the importance of "recognizing ourselves as a people" and "understanding who we are" to build the Canary Islands of the future. Under the idea "We are Heritage of the Canary Islands", the president stressed that it is the citizens who have built the archipelago with their "daily effort" and their "very own way of not giving up when things get tough".
The leader urged for "pride" that is not "complacency", acknowledging that while the Canary Islands have "reasons to be proud", they also face "challenges we cannot ignore". He pointed out that the archipelago does not live in isolation from international crises, wars, or market tensions, whose consequences directly affect the daily lives of its inhabitants.
Clavijo warned about the "gigantic paradigm shifts" globally and the threat of cuts to community policies and aid for productive sectors. "We are navigating an ocean that is sending us clear signals of an approaching storm", he warned, emphasizing the need to "prepare to overcome it" and not be "naive" in either Europe or Spain.
The president defended "justice" for the Canary Islands as an outermost region, not "privileges", and criticized the "political crisis situation in Spain" which, according to him, makes "advancement impossible" due to "short-term maneuvering" and "constant bickering".
He also recalled that the land has "managed to move forward" by defending its "accent", its "symbols", and its "identity", which is not "nostalgia" but "strength". "Here is a people that recognizes itself, that loves itself, and that wants to continue being the master of its destiny", he stated.
During the event, tribute was paid to those who "make the land better", mentioning the Canary Islands Awards and the Gold Medals. Recognition was given to the Fundación Canaria MAÍN for its support to children, youth, and families; the graphic humor of José Luis Padilla Morilla "Padylla"; and the contemporary architecture of Fernando Martín Menis.
Other awards recognized trajectories such as the music of Braulio, the economic commitment of Fernando Berge Royo, the solidarity of the Casa de Galicia in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the sports achievements of Juan Espino Dieppa, the business sector of Ron Arehucas, and the memory of Pedro Zerolo.
Further distinctions were presented to Ámate (support against breast cancer), Antonio López Bonillo (education, culture, sports), María del Carmen Almenara (traditional clothing), the Nursing Colleges of the Canary Islands, the Club Deportivo In Corpore Sano, and the Danza de las Cintas de Güímar, highlighting the importance of "practicing it, sharing it, and transmitting it".
Clavijo concluded by emphasizing that Canarian identity "continues to speak to itself" through young people, who, with "other codes", feel the Canary Islands with "intensity". "They are telling us with pride that the Canary Islands are loved, respected, and defended", he noted, urging that what has been inherited should be felt "as their own".
Finally, the president reaffirmed the idea of a "nation" that "demands respect", "does not resign itself to being a periphery" and "does not accept its difficulties being used as an excuse to limit its rights". "The Canary Islands have a future, yes, but if they continue to be the Canary Islands", he stated, wishing "Long live my countrymen, the children of the volcanoes".
