The central executive will contribute 23.1 million euros to the Canary Islands to address the economic consequences stemming from the war in Iran. The announcement was made by the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, and the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, at a press conference in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Clavijo expressed his satisfaction with the inclusion of the archipelago's specific characteristics in the second anti-crisis decree-law approved by the state government. "I want to thank the Government of Spain for its willingness to compensate Canarians so that they are not at a disadvantage compared to other citizens of Spanish territory," stated the Canarian president.
Both executives had previously agreed to improve the aid destined for the islands. The state will contribute 23.1 million euros, while the Canary Islands Government will cover the rest of the budget to continue with the measures implemented since March. These measures include the zero rate of the Canary Islands General Indirect Tax (IGIC) on fuels and the extraordinary increase of 99% in the partial refund of the fuel tax for farmers and transporters.
Furthermore, the president of the Canary Islands highlighted the inclusion of the possibility of installing batteries in La Palma. The initial compensation of 15.3 million euros has been supplemented with an additional 7.8 million. The new decree, which extends the aid from the previous one, will be in effect until September of this year, with the possibility of extension if the conflict in the Middle East continues.
