The Sonora Festival is back at Plaza de Santa Ana with eleven concerts featuring Canary Islands artists. Following the success of the previous edition, which drew over 10,000 attendees, the festival has been extended to three days: October 16, 17, and 18. This year's lineup offers a diverse range of styles, highlighting urban artist Juseph, the band M-Clan, and a special charity performance by Efecto Pasillo alongside the Maestro Valle University Orchestra and Barrios Orquestados.
The Sonora Festival, recognized as the longest-standing emerging band competition in the Canary Islands, crowned Good Franco and Los Blody as the top bands in April. Both will have the opportunity to perform on the main stage with established national and international artists. On Friday, October 16, Good Franco will share the stage with Juseph, Barry B, and Daniela Garsal, among others, in a night celebrating urban music and pop sounds. Tickets for these first two nights are free until full capacity is reached.
Saturday, October 17, will be dedicated to rock music, featuring M-Clan concluding their 30th-anniversary tour. On the same day, Los Blody and the Extremaduran group Sanguijuelas del Guadiana will also perform. The international touch will be provided by the British trio The Molotovs, bringing punk and mod scene sounds to Plaza de Santa Ana. Entry for these two nights will be free on a first-come, first-served basis.
The closing night, Sunday, October 18, will host a symphonic spectacle by Efecto Pasillo with the Maestro Valle University Orchestra. Proceeds from this evening, which will have a symbolic ticket price, will be donated to the Barrios Orquestados project.
The festival champions local talent, with approximately 70% of the lineup featuring Canary Islands artists, an initiative supported by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Government of the Canary Islands. Santiago Gutiérrez, one of the festival directors, stated at the event's presentation that they are focusing on Canarian artists during this significant time for music.
Furthermore, Laboratorio Sonora, a professional meeting, will take place in November, aiming to provide artists with tools to advance their musical careers. The festival continues to establish itself as a vital showcase for musicians from the Canary Islands, particularly those starting out, addressing the challenge of limited spaces for musical creation and production in the region.
Daniel Coronado, from Los Blody, expressed gratitude for the group's recent achievements, including performances in Madrid and La Graciosa, facilitated by the 'Sonora passport,' one of the festival's prizes. Fran de Armas, a member of Good Franco, shared similar sentiments, expressing pride in representing the Canary Islands on their tour.
Guacimara Medina, Minister of Culture for the Island Council, acknowledged the difficulty for Canarian talent to gain recognition beyond the islands and thanked the Sonora Festival for paving the way. The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, voiced her support for the festival, which aligns with the city's bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2031, highlighting the cultural investment of 500,000 euros.
This investment aims to elevate the Canarian music scene to a national level. Through initiatives like this, the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council seeks to realize the mayor's vision of the capital as a 'city of opportunities.' On October 16, 17, and 18, Plaza de Santa Ana will once again host artists showcasing Canarian talent across Spain.
