The Canary archipelago has recorded a 3.42% increase in foreign worker affiliation during July, bringing the total figure to 148,776 employed individuals. Of this total, 56,718 come from European Union countries, while 92,058 are citizens of non-EU nations. Compared to July of the previous year, the number of foreign contributors in the islands has grown by 15,174 people, representing an 11.36% year-on-year rise.
By country of origin, Italy remains the nationality with the most foreign affiliates in the Canary Islands, totaling 25,974 contributors. It is closely followed by Venezuela, with 15,353 employed, and Colombia, with 15,102. Other notable nationalities include Morocco (8,761), Germany (7,909), and the United Kingdom (7,170).
Nationally, the average affiliation of foreigners in Spain also saw an increase in July, with a rise of 66,046 people compared to the previous month, reaching a historic record of 3,512,223 workers. Over the past year, Spain has added 420,875 foreign affiliates, a 13.6% growth, significantly surpassing the 2.9% increase recorded in general affiliation.
Foreign workers currently constitute 15.6% of the total Social Security affiliates. The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration highlights the intense growth of this group, particularly accelerating since late April, coinciding with the launch of an extraordinary regularization process. As of July 30, 262,475 foreigners had registered as a result of this process.
Regarding gender distribution, out of the total foreign affiliates registered in July, 2,010,267 are men and 1,501,956 are women, with the latter representing nearly 43% of the group. Workers from European Union countries account for approximately 27.5% of the total (967,381 affiliates), while non-EU citizens number 2,544,842.
At the state level, Morocco leads foreign affiliation with 415,310 workers, followed by Colombia (347,467), Romania (342,555), Venezuela (247,209), Italy (223,589), China (136,395), Peru (133,002), and Ukraine (84,599).
The hospitality sector is where the largest proportion of foreign affiliates are concentrated, representing 32.9% of the total employed in this industry. Agriculture (28%) and construction (26.6%) also show a high presence. In administrative and transport activities, they exceed 18%.
In the Special System for Domestic Employees, foreigners make up 46.7% of affiliates, and in the Special Agricultural System, they account for 39.2%. Regarding employment contracts, 86.4% of foreign workers had a permanent contract in July, a significantly higher figure than the 58.9% recorded between 2017 and 2021, before the labor reform came into effect. Temporality stands at 13.6%.
The affiliation of self-employed foreign workers also reached a historic high in July, with 531,568 individuals, a 9.2% increase from the previous year. The Ministry highlights the rise of foreigners in high-skilled activities, exceeding 33% in telecommunications and computer programming.
