On the occasion of Canary Islands Day, parties such as Sí se puede, Lanzarote en Pie, Nueva Canarias, Podemos Canarias, Izquierda Unida Canaria, and Movimiento Sumar Canarias have issued a joint statement. In it, they warn about the "environmental degradation" and the "progressive disappearance of the natural heritage" of the islands, in addition to criticizing "institutional abandonment" and the mercantilist and demographic pressure.
The organizations point out that urban pressure and "touristification" are encroaching on community spaces, transforming historic neighborhoods into holiday market zones and forcing out local residents. They lament that many families are unsure if they can pay their rent next month and that young people are compelled to leave due to the "impossibility" of staying.
The document emphasizes the link between social justice and environmental justice, arguing that self-government should extend beyond institutional structures to become daily sovereignty, allowing decisions on the archipelago's economic, social, and energy model.
They advocate for defending the territory against speculation, ensuring that generated wealth serves to care for the citizens. Finally, the left-wing forces call for unity to confront these shared challenges and build a common project, concluding that "we still have time to decide another direction" to make the Canary Islands a place to "sow the future and put down roots".
