The plenary session of the Santa Cruz de La Palma City Council has rejected a motion presented by Nueva Canarias-bc to establish a technical committee to analyze the viability of a social initiative cooperative dedicated to care services in the municipality.

Nueva Canarias' proposal aimed to offer an innovative solution to the growing aging population and the increase in unwanted loneliness, issues that severely affect the health and dependence of citizens. The political party argues that the current care model is insufficient to meet the demands of an increasingly elderly society.
According to the party, the municipality faces an unprecedented social challenge, requiring conciliation services that are not limited to simple assistance. The initiative sought to transform the care sector into a driver of social economy and territorial rootedness, generating employment and local development, as opposed to outsourcing to companies unrelated to local realities, which often result in precarious employment and depersonalized care.
For the implementation of this action, Nueva Canarias had requested the creation of a technical Working Group, the tutoring of local care sector workers, and the cession of a municipal space for the cooperative's headquarters, with the aim of establishing a central hub for the municipality's care network.

"With this motion, we proposed a paradigm shift that would contemplate the management of care from proximity and economic democracy. We believe that Santa Cruz de La Palma has the opportunity to be part of the change in the field of care with the creation of projects of this type, which are already working in other communities, such as Andalusia, Madrid, the Basque Country, or Asturias; however, these opportunities that we seek for the municipality are impossible for a governing team that is not open to current solutions that, in other territories, have proven viable, in addition to being a global trend."

Maeve Sanjuán Duque · Councilwoman for Nueva Canarias
Councilwoman Maeve Sanjuán Duque lamented the lack of support from the governing team, noting that their initiatives are "repeatedly ridiculed, underestimated, and even, when supported by the plenary, are deliberately forgotten to prevent their materialization." She reminded that behind every proposal there is reflection, work, and respect for the citizenry.
In Spain, there are various cooperatives and social economy models dedicated to home care and elderly care, distinguished by their human, professional, and self-managed approach.
