The environmental organization accuses the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, of a "double game" following the refusal to declare the Underwater Gardens project of insular interest, while advancing the processing of a new artificial wave theme park.
According to a statement issued by the platform, the Cabildo of Tenerife is managing the insular interest qualification for an artificial wave park named WaveGarden. These types of facilities have already faced citizen and environmental opposition in other locations such as Donostia, Montgat (Barcelona), and El Prat del Llobregat.
Canarias Tiene un Límite considers this project "a new threat" to the island's southern coast. The theme park is planned near La Tejita beach and on agricultural land in Granadilla de Abona, an area noted for its landscape and sporting value in the Canary Islands.
The platform demands that Rosa Dávila reject any declaration of insular interest for this project. They warn of the risk of "masking as general interest what is, in reality, a private business initiative with a strong environmental and territorial impact on public and protected space," repeating an observed pattern.
It is recalled that after two years of collective efforts, 34 environmental and sports groups gathered under the Salvar Punta Blanca Platform succeeded in having the Cabildo withdraw the insular interest for the Underwater Gardens project, which affected protected rural land and the Teno-Rasca marine strip.
The organization points out that, despite these victories, the southwest of Tenerife continues to face similar threats. They criticize the Cabildo for promoting a "green" discourse in a pre-election year, while facilitating the "over-exploitation of tourism" on the coast by approving successive projects.
The WaveGarden technology, which would generate the artificial waves, is not new and has been controversial, with several projects canceled or outright rejected due to citizen and environmental pressure.
Therefore, the platform reiterates its demand to immediately deny any insular interest status or administrative authorization for WaveGarden. They call, "once again," for a real tourism moratorium to halt the construction of hotels and similar infrastructure on the Canary Islands coastline.
