The Socialist Municipal Group of Santa Cruz de La Palma has expressed its strong rejection of the investment priorities of the governing group (PP-CC), which has put out to tender for 774,636.55 euros of insular funds (PIDL) the construction of a square and a cybernetic fountain on Avenida El Puente.
For the socialists, allocating almost 800,000 euros of public money to such an infrastructure demonstrates a "total disconnect" of the municipal government from the real and urgent needs of the city's residents. After consulting citizens on social media, the responses have been unanimous: housing and parking, the two major structural problems plaguing the municipality.
The PSOE compares this investment with that of other town councils that use the Insular Plan for Local Development (PIDL) for projects such as cultural centers, urban spas, or the creation of parking lots. Faced with the "showcase roadmap" of PP and CC, the Socialist Group has presented alternative and financeable proposals, shying away from grandiose projects.
Among the PSOE's proposals is the acquisition of public land to begin mitigating the city's severe housing problem and interventions in abandoned heritage, such as the purchase of the Cueva de Gredos for its adaptation as a youth, cultural, artistic, and coworking space.
The socialists argue that it is possible to refurbish and modernize the square on Avenida El Puente in a comfortable and accessible way, with funding left over to address other municipal deficiencies. They have urged the governing group to "listen to the street, rectify, and redirect the Insular Plan for Local Development towards projects that truly improve the daily lives of Santa Cruz de La Palma".
