The Canary Islands registered 5.69 million international tourists in the first four months of the year, a slight increase of 0.2%, although the total spending by these visitors decreased by 0.68% to 8.737 billion euros.

Data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals that while the number of international arrivals to the islands between January and April 2026 experienced a slight year-on-year increase, the associated spending by these tourists showed a downward trend. Specifically in April, 1.21 million foreign tourists were recorded, representing an 8.3% drop compared to the same month last year, and spending stood at 1.796 billion euros, down 6.8%.
The average spending per tourist was 1,534 euros, a decrease of 0.56%, while the daily expenditure rose to 190 euros, up 5.81%. The average trip duration, on the other hand, was reduced by 6% to 8.1 days.
Nationally, Spain attracted nearly 26.6 million international tourists by April, a 3.4% increase from the previous year, with accumulated spending reaching 36.703 billion euros, a 6.7% rise. The Ministry of Industry and Tourism highlighted that April's figures confirm a first-quarter period where spending growth outpaced arrival growth.
The main source countries for tourists to the Canary Islands during this period were the United Kingdom, with nearly 4.9 million visitors and a 2.5% increase; followed by France, with over 3.3 million and a 1.8% decrease; and Germany, with approximately 3.3 million and a 2.8% drop.
The United Kingdom also led accumulated spending between January and April in the islands, accounting for 15.1% of the total, followed by Germany (12.2%) and France (7.6%). Across Spain, the Canary Islands ranked as the autonomous community receiving the most tourists in the first quarter, with 5.7 million, and recording the highest accumulated spending, at 23.8% of the national total.
