“"In life as in politics, changes sometimes come through betrayal, without us wanting them or being able to avoid them. My only wish is that management is not blocked and that the initiated projects are completed for the benefit of all, because the fate of the Antigua City Council is also the fate of all the residents of the Municipality."

The mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, has sent a farewell letter to staff, Local Police, and residents prior to Saturday's plenary session on June 19, where a no-confidence motion will be executed.
In his message, Peña thanks the unconditional support from municipal employees, the Local Police force, the residents of Antigua, his party ALxAN, and the PSOE of Fuerteventura, noting the latter as the sole group remaining loyal.
The outgoing mayor reflected on his career path, from his early days as a keeper at the Granja de Pozo Negro to his current mayoral position, stating he leaves with the "assurance of a job well done." He also conveyed his hope that the change in government would not hinder ongoing management or the completion of initiated projects.
Peña also directed a reproach towards those initiating the motion, stating, "Changes sometimes come through betrayal." This is understood to refer to Juan Cabrera (AMF), the councilor for Parks and Gardens who will succeed him, and Giuseppe Signorino (Contigo), the councilor for Commerce, who are breaking the governing pact.
The no-confidence motion against Matías Peña is supported by the AMF and Contigo groups, along with Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular, which is expected to conclude his term that began in 2019.
