The progressive deterioration of the roof of the Antigua Municipal Sports Center has led the council to decide to close the facility. According to technical reports, the roofing shows serious deficiencies, with fallen panels, large holes, and rust affecting the support beams and the metal sheets covering the sports center.
The mayor, Juan Cabrera, stated that "the roof presents serious deficiencies, panels have fallen, holes are getting bigger and more rust is affecting the support beams and the sheets covering the sports center." The facility's age, dating back 30 years, is a key factor in its current condition.
A technical report prepared by the Sports Department and Urban Planning recommends suspending pedestrian traffic in the affected area to prevent risks to users' physical integrity. The Councilor for Sports, Alejandro García, confirmed the closure after the conclusion of the 2026 Summer and Sports Campaign.
Meanwhile, the head of Urban Planning and Infrastructure, David Alberto Guerra, reported that the renovation project has already been commissioned. The work will be put out to emergency tender and is expected to take about three months once the favorable report is obtained.
