Néstor Herrera, a cyclist for Gran Canaria Bike Team, has achieved victory in the 42nd Vuelta al Bajo Aragón, maintaining his lead from the first stage to the final one in Caspe. This triumph marks the most significant achievement of the season for the Gran Canarian team.
The Gran Canaria Bike Team delivered an outstanding performance, securing third place in the overall team classification. They were only surpassed by Sorex Cycling Team from Belgium and G.D. Piñero Martínez Motor BM from Murcia.
The tour gathered 32 teams and 200 riders, featuring a notable international presence from seven countries, including Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom, Argentina, and Mexico. Winning in this setting is a result of great importance for cycling in Gran Canaria.
Herrera began the race impressively, winning the first stage between Maella and Caspe and becoming the race's first leader. The Gran Canaria Bike Team was also the best team of that day.
Throughout the four stages, the team took on the responsibility of defending Herrera's lead, controlling rivals' movements and ensuring no breakaway jeopardized the yellow jersey.
In the second stage, an individual time trial in Chiprana, Swiss rider Thibaut Beckers of Isorex Cycling Team won the stage, but Herrera retained the lead. Pablo Álvarez also performed well in the time trial.
The third stage, between Fabara and Nonaspe, saw victory for Juan Bastida of G.D. Piñero Martínez Motor BM, while Herrera arrived in the leading group, maintaining his overall lead.
The final stage, starting and finishing in Caspe, was won by Aitor Ros Ruiz of El Nieto del Lobo-Nutriban, but Herrera's leadership remained intact until the end.
Herrera's success is largely due to the work of his teammates from Gran Canaria: Pablo Álvarez (Agüimes), Asier Álvarez (Telde), Ayose Robaina González (Telde), and Álvaro Gómez Bethencourt (Agüimes). Their control and protection efforts were crucial.
Furthermore, Pablo Álvarez and Asier Álvarez finished 4th and 9th respectively among first-year cadets. The team, composed of five young cyclists, demonstrated a high level of competitiveness away from home.
The sports management, led by Yojan Reyes, has seen their season's work rewarded with this victory and the third place in the team classification, consolidating the competitiveness of GCBT.
