The historic 'Tienda de Benjamín' in Teror has been awarded a Tourism Recognition diploma for Sustainability, during an event held in Santa María de Guía on September 27th.

The municipality of Teror will be represented at the World Tourism Day event for the Northern Gran Canaria Commonwealth, hosted this year in Santa María de Guía. During the event, the Northern Gran Canaria Tourism Recognition diplomas will be presented. The well-known ‘Tienda de Benjamín’, located in Puente del Pino, will receive this honor in the ‘Sustainability’ category.
The event, focused on artificial intelligence and the digital transformation of the tourism sector, aligns with the theme set by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO): ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism’. The program will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Plaza Grande of the historic center of Santa María de Guía. The eleven municipalities of the Northern Commonwealth, along with Gran Canaria Tourism, will showcase their tourist, cultural, gastronomic, and leisure offerings at various stands.
The Tourism Department of the Teror City Council, led by councilwoman Laura Quintana, invites the public to attend. Teror will have a promotional stand offering tastings of local products such as the Teror chorizo sandwich, traditional sweets from Benitez, and Agua de Teror. The councilwoman emphasized that it will be a unique opportunity to highlight the municipality's tourist and cultural offerings and to connect with other towns in the region.
The program also includes two virtual treasure hunts exploring the tourist resources of Santa María de Guía, the presentation of the Northern Gran Canaria Tourism Recognition Awards 2026, and a musical performance. This year's awards recognize companies and entities in the categories of Accommodation, Restoration, Leisure, Innovation, and Sustainability. La Tienda de Benjamín and Api Turismo ‘The fascinating world of bees’ from La Aldea de San Nicolás are honored in Sustainability.
The Teror City Council congratulates La Tienda de Benjamín for this award, which acknowledges the trajectory of an establishment deeply rooted in the community's memory. The building housing the shop, constructed in 1880, was originally a family home that later became a small shop. In 1970, Benjamín Ramírez García leased the premises, marking a significant period for Puente del Pino. Currently, Miguel Ramírez and Victoria Macías, with the involvement of family members like Víctor Ramírez Macías, continue to preserve the essence of the establishment.
Tourism councilwoman Laura Quintana Rodríguez highlighted that the ‘Tienda del Puente’ exemplifies how traditional commerce can become an emotional heritage for a town, celebrating not only the Ramírez family's history but also the essence of Teror.
Since 2016, World Tourism Day in Northern Gran Canaria has been celebrated annually in a different municipality. This edition in Santa María de Guía aims to highlight the region's tourism activity. Gran Canaria's Tourism Counselor, Carlos Álamo, emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in transforming the sector, while Santiago de Armas, president of the Tourism Commission of the Chamber of Commerce of Gran Canaria, noted the event's consolidation and its importance for recognizing the sector and fostering cultural and economic exchange.
