The new sports facility, executed by Condaca Canarias S. L., involved an investment of 896,583.17 euros and ends a long process to provide El Hierro with a facility long requested by the Princesa Teseida Athletics Club, which has around 200 registered members.
The mayor of El Pinar, Juan Miguel Padrón Brito, expressed his satisfaction with the completion of this work, highlighting the effort made to overcome the obstacles that accompanied the project, which was initially announced in April 2022 with a planned investment of 543,667.60 euros.
The construction of the track went through different stages, including its incorporation into the Extraordinary Plan for Tourist Sustainability in Destinations 2022 with European Next Generation funds, after the first bidding process was declared void. The company GMI carried out the price update before the works were finally awarded to Condaca.
The Councilor for Tourism, Magaly González, recalled that the project had overcome numerous obstacles and advocated for an environmentally respectful action, blended with the surroundings and responding to a real need of the island. She stressed that the general interest must prevail over particular interests and thanked the club and municipal technicians for their support.
The Councilor for Public Works, Juan Díaz, highlighted the special attention paid to the conservation of the natural environment, preserving all existing trees and expanding a warehouse in an almost imperceptible way. He recalled the historical link of Hoya del Morcillo with island sports, as it used to host the island's football league.
The president of the Princesa Teseida Athletics Club, José Luis Brito, confirmed that the project fulfills a historical demand. To accommodate both disciplines, the project includes a dirt 7-a-side football field inside the track.
The project's design and technical supervision were carried out by GMI (Gabinete Multidisciplinar de Ingeniería). The new track, located at about 1,000 meters above sea level, will allow for outdoor sports practice and will facilitate sports tourism and training camps.
The construction is part of the project “Monte, Mar, Volcanes y Tradiciones” (Mountain, Sea, Volcanoes and Traditions), financed by European Next Generation funds, with a total contribution of 3,683,747 euros to the municipality to enhance tourism competitiveness, sustainability, and diversification.
