Recent rainfall has allowed for the first verification, since the completion of the works, of the effectiveness of Collector 5, a key infrastructure for the development of the municipality's sewage system. The works have enabled the evacuation of accumulated water in Travesía del Pino and water descending through La Paz and El Chamorro streets towards the monument area of La Paloma.
The total investment in these works amounted to 1,200,282.07 euros. Funding came from the Framework Agreement for Administrative Collaboration between the Cabildo de El Hierro and the Ayuntamiento de El Pinar (Canary Islands Development Fund - FDCAN), which contributed 708,424.70 euros; the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, with 300,000 euros; and the El Pinar City Council itself, with 191,857.37 euros from its own funds.
The mayor of El Pinar de El Hierro, Juan Miguel Padrón Brito, thanked residents for their understanding during the construction of this important infrastructure. "This system significantly increases our municipality's sewage capacity and guarantees the evacuation of rainwater, which is essential considering that, due to climate change, episodes of torrential rain are becoming more frequent," he explained, acknowledging the inconvenience caused.
Juan Díaz, Councilor for Public Works, detailed that the number five collector allows for the evacuation of water accumulated in Travesía del Pino, near the health center, and that which descends through La Paz and El Chamorro streets to La Paloma. Previously, rainwater from the El Gusano area accumulated in Charcantón street, posing safety issues.
The upcoming asphalting of Travesía del Pino will improve the road's leveling and gradient, preventing puddles and further facilitating rainwater evacuation to the new sewer. The City Council has also submitted a project to the Insular Water Council of El Hierro to channel water from El Pasito street to the natural ravine of La Vieja.
