Starting Thursday, April 16, the Canarias Tactical Group, comprising personnel from the 93rd Field Artillery Regiment (RACA 93) and the 16th Sappers Battalion (BZ XVI), will commence foot and vehicle patrols on the islands of La Gomera and El Hierro.

The primary objective of this deployment is to enhance surveillance, exert a deterrent effect, and ensure the security of land areas under national sovereignty on both islands. These activities are part of the Permanent Operations, a crucial contribution by the Armed Forces (FAS) to National Security during peacetime.
In El Hierro, BZ XVI personnel will conduct a static equipment exhibition on the 20th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, in the Town Hall Square of Valverde. Meanwhile, in San Sebastián de La Gomera, the RACA 93 will perform a solemn Flag raising ceremony on the 21st at 11:00 AM in the Torre del Conde Park.
This deployment not only facilitates effective environmental surveillance but also fosters a deeper understanding of the terrain and the social reality of the islands. Furthermore, it aims to promote the integration of military personnel into the local community and consolidate the presence of the Armed Forces in the Canarian territory.
Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, head of the Canary Islands Command of the Army and Commander of the Terrestrial Operational Command (CMOT), is responsible for planning these presence and surveillance operations, which cover not only the Canary Islands but also Ceuta, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands, maintaining constant coordination with relevant civil and military authorities.
