The initiative, driven by the Department of Cleaning led by Jacobo Lemes, will take place every Thursday and includes waste removal, sweeping, high-pressure washing, and disinfection of the areas where containers are located. The first action allowed for the complete cleaning of Pérez Galdós street and also covered other points in the city, such as Paz Peraza street, near the Ginory car park, and the area around the Open Mall.
The operation, now in its second week this Thursday, begins with the coordination of collection services to ensure that glass, general waste, and selective collection containers can be emptied early in the morning. Once this phase is complete, municipal workers remove waste accumulated around the containers, including belongings, glass, and debris.
Next, street cleaning teams work on the area. For this purpose, and with the corresponding coordination with Mobility and Local Police, the street is closed when necessary to work safely. Containers are temporarily moved to facilitate pavement cleaning, first by sweeping and removing small debris, and then with high-pressure water to eliminate adhered dirt, clean, and disinfect the surface.
Once the work is finished, the containers are returned to their original location, and municipal staff inspect the area to verify the results of the intervention. The Councilor for Cleaning, Jacobo Lemes, explains that this campaign allows for more thorough action in spaces that, due to their daily use, require specific attention. “It's not just about emptying the containers, but also about thoroughly cleaning the entire surrounding area. We want these actions to be continuous and for the collection points to be in the best possible condition.” Lemes also highlights the importance of coordinating different services so that the work can be carried out in an orderly and effective manner. “Behind each intervention there is a plan that allows us to empty the containers first, remove accumulated waste, and then clean and disinfect the pavement. It is a joint effort that we want to maintain every week,” he points out.
The campaign will continue tomorrow, Thursday, November 5th, with new actions at the container points located on Padre Claret, Chimia, and Muyay streets.
The councilor calls for citizen collaboration to preserve the results of these actions and prevent waste from accumulating again next to the containers. In this regard, he recalls the importance of correctly using the collection areas and disposing of belongings, debris, and other special waste through the designated channels.
