In recent weeks, the UPMEC has had to intervene on several occasions to maintain order and prevent conflicts during sporting events held in the capital of Lanzarote. These actions aim to ensure a safe and violence-free environment at the city's sports events.
One of the most recent incidents occurred approximately two weeks ago, after a youth football match at the Argana Alta field. Initially, UPMEC officers calmed a group of fans who were causing disturbances from the stands. Later, they intervened again on the field, where a dispute broke out among the players. The swift action of the officers, along with the collaboration of the coaches from both teams, was crucial in controlling the situation and preventing further escalation, as reported by the City Council.
Although the altercations did not lead to serious consequences, the effective intervention of the Local Police allowed the matches to continue without further interruptions. These types of interventions reaffirm the UPMEC's commitment to safety and good coexistence in Arrecife's sports venues.
Since its creation, the UPMEC has actively worked on preventing sports violence. In collaboration with the Sports Department of the Arrecife City Council, led by councilor Eli Merino, meetings are being held with local clubs and federations. The objective is to promote compliance with legislation on violence prevention in sports and to foster values such as respect and tolerance.
A fundamental pillar of this initiative is the dissemination of the “Protocol for the prevention of child and youth violence in sports, recreational, leisure, and free time environments,” promoted by the Arrecife City Council. This protocol aligns with the Organic Law for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against Violence (LOPIVI), seeking to protect minors from situations of violence or abuse. It also emphasizes strengthening the role of the protection delegate in each club, responsible for ensuring the well-being of young athletes.
