The Tías Council aims to create a safer environment for the schoolchildren of Alcalde Rafael Cedrés school, with the goal of executing the project during the 2026-2027 school year. The initiative has an initial budget of 870,000 euros, and the deadline for submitting offers is July 28. The award is expected in the autumn, followed by a six-month period for the execution of the planned improvements after the contract is signed.
The works will include new vertical signage and road markings to restrict vehicle access in the area, particularly on Igualdad street, which is considered a constant risk of accidents for the hundreds of children who access the educational center daily.
The project also includes improvements to public lighting and the installation of elements to provide shade, along with urban furniture that will prioritize pedestrians over vehicles. According to the project's guidelines, it represents a "radical change in the model of public space use, prioritizing people over vehicles and creating a protective environment for children."
The project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, encompasses engineering and construction works, including earthmoving, pipe installation, electrical conduits, signage, and paving.
The mayor, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, and the Urban Planning Councilor, Ulpiano Calero, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the municipal commitment to the safety of schoolchildren and the creation of more welcoming and accessible public spaces, representing a significant advancement for safe mobility and the quality of life in the municipality and the neighborhood.
