The Fuerteventura Island Council hosts representatives from UNICEF Spain to evaluate its candidacy for Child Friendly City and the progress of the II Childhood and Adolescence Plan.

The Fuerteventura Island Council has welcomed representatives from UNICEF Spain as part of the evaluation process for the island institution's candidacy for the Child Friendly City recognition. The Minister of Social Action, Víctor Alonso, met with the technicians from UNICEF Spain and UNICEF Canarias, Paola Beltrán and Rosario Pérez, respectively.
Throughout the day, various evaluation sessions were held with key stakeholders involved in the island's childhood and adolescence policies. These included a political-technical meeting with Víctor Alonso, a session with the technical team responsible for the plan, and another with the Internal Commission for Childhood and Adolescence, comprising technical staff from different areas of the Cabildo. A meeting also took place with the Insular Council of Childhood and Adolescence, made up of children and adolescents from various municipalities of Fuerteventura.
These sessions have allowed for the assessment of the work being carried out on the island to promote the rights of children and adolescents, foster their active participation, and enhance coordination among different areas and administrations. The evaluation is a crucial step towards obtaining the Child Friendly City recognition from UNICEF Spain and is part of the implementation of the II Childhood and Adolescence Plan of Fuerteventura.
Among the Plan's upcoming activities are the workshops ‘Screens Online, People Connected. Workshops on Coexistence and Emotions in the Digital Age’, scheduled for October 23rd, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at the Youth Center of Antigua and the CEO Antigua. The initiative is aimed at professionals, teachers, families, and students.
The sessions for professionals, teachers, and families will be led by Montse Martín López, a child educator and pedagogue specializing in the healthy use of technological devices. She will conduct workshops on “Digital Coexistence and Healthy Habits” and “Positive, Active, and Responsible Use of Technology”.
In parallel, at the CEO Antigua, specific sessions will be held for students in 5th and 6th grade of Primary Education and 1st year of Secondary Education, led by Yesenia Jiménez González, a pedagogue with expertise in educational programs integrating technologies, and Josmery León Domínguez, a psychologist focused on developing critical thinking in young people regarding technological devices.
Under the title “Inside the Screen: Emotions, Networks, and Me”, the student sessions will address, through participatory dynamics, the influence of social media, video games, and chats on emotions and relationships, covering topics such as social pressure, digital empathy, cyberbullying, exclusion, and building a safe and respectful digital identity.
The day will conclude with a joint meeting of students, families, teachers, and professionals to share key reflections and proposals from the workshops and establish common commitments to improve digital coexistence and well-being. Student participation will be exclusively for students of CEO Antigua, while the rest of the sessions will be open to registered professionals, teachers, and families.
