The Fuerteventura Island Council hosted the presentation of the 1st Carlos Romero Women's Football Memorial, a new sporting event organized by CD Peña de la Amistad. The event aims to pay tribute to Carlos Romero, a former board member of the club and a person closely linked to sports and social life in Fuerteventura.
The tournament will take place on Sunday, September 6th, starting at 11:30 AM, at the Los Pozos Municipal Field. Participating teams include CD Peña de La Amistad, CD Caday Fuerteventura, and Inter Playa Honda. The event is supported by the Fuerteventura Island Council, the Puerto del Rosario City Council, and the Government of the Canary Islands.
Lola García, president of the Fuerteventura Island Council, emphasized the memorial's importance for women's football on the island and for honoring Carlos Romero's work. Manuel Miranda, Minister of Territorial Policy for the Government of the Canary Islands, highlighted majorero women's football and Carlos Romero's social commitment.
David de Vera, mayor of Puerto del Rosario, acknowledged the efforts of CD Peña de la Amistad in making the memorial a reality. Luis González, insular councilor for Sports, congratulated the club on the initiative, underscoring sports' role as a social tool.
Carlos Romero, who passed away last year, was a board member of CD Peña de La Amistad for many years and actively participated in its development. His involvement is part of the club's history, founded in 1972, which has promoted sports and social life in Puerto del Rosario, with a focus on grassroots sports.
Beyond his sports involvement, Carlos Romero was the first social worker at the Island Council, joining in 1985. He had a significant career advocating for social rights. In 2024, the Island Council and the Official College of Social Work of Las Palmas unveiled a plaque in his honor.
The memorial aims to be a space for gathering and promoting women's football, coinciding with a period of growth for the sport on Fuerteventura, marked by increasing numbers of women's teams and greater female participation in the island's sports structures.
