The Canary Islands Tourism Council, chaired by the regional minister of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, convened in Fuerteventura to analyze the sector's situation and announce that the Canary Islands Tourism Awards 2026 will be held on the island.

The meeting of the Canary Islands Tourism Council took place this Friday at the Puerto del Rosario Technology Park in Fuerteventura. During the gathering, crucial topics such as the evolution of the conflict in Ormuz and the situation of a hantavirus-affected vessel bound for Tenerife were discussed, aiming to anticipate potential repercussions on the archipelago's tourism activity.

"This is the first time these awards come to Fuerteventura, because throughout this legislature we have tried to extend all the Ministry's activity beyond the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. We have taken the awards to Lanzarote, to La Palma, and now it's time to celebrate them on the island of Fuerteventura."

Within this session, it was announced that the Canary Islands Tourism Awards 2026 will be held for the first time in Fuerteventura. The ceremony is scheduled for September 24 at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos in Puerto del Rosario, an event that seeks to decentralize the ministry's activities beyond the capital islands.
During the meeting, the first four members of the jury for the Canary Islands Tourism Awards 2026 were appointed. These include the president of Asolan, the councilor of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce, the secretary of Sustainability and Occupational Health of the CCOO Canarias Federation, and the director of the Canary Islands Tourism Chair of Sustainability and Data Intelligence. The jury will be completed with new additions in the coming weeks.
The session also served to review the regulatory agenda promoted by the department over the past three years, focused on updating and adapting the tourism legal framework to the current reality of the Canary Islands. Notable advancements include the regulation of active tourism, the Law for the Sustainable Planning of Tourist Use of Housing, and the future Canary Islands Tourism Law.
The councilor for Tourism of the Fuerteventura Cabildo positively assessed the holding of the Council on the island, emphasizing the need to analyze the impact of international uncertainty on the tourism sector and employment, which is vital for the Majorero population. Representatives from the employers' association Asofuer also expressed their satisfaction with the opportunity to directly address the sector's challenges.
The deadline for submitting nominations for the Canary Islands Tourism Awards 2026, which recognize professional or business initiatives and careers in areas such as employment, innovation, sustainability, accessibility, and the archipelago's national and international projection, is open until May 30 through the electronic headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands.
