The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has concluded the preliminary consultation for the development of Protection and Management Plans for the island's ZEPA (Special Protection Areas for Birds) that do not overlap with protected natural areas, such as those in Lajares, Esquinzo, and Costa de Jarubio.

The island corporation's Spatial Planning department has received nearly twenty reports during the public consultation period, which will now be transferred to the drafting team responsible for developing the plans. These reports come from public administrations and affected landowners.
The objective of these plans is to establish the necessary conditions to maintain the areas in a favorable state of conservation, ensuring the preservation and distribution of species and addressing the presence of priority habitats. The aim is to resolve issues such as habitat loss due to urbanization, disturbance to birds from unregulated activities, or environmental pollution.
The Protection and Management Plans will delineate the protected areas of each ZEPA according to their level of protection and fragility, harmonizing uses compatible with the area's values. Future public information periods will allow for general public input.
