The General Hospital of Fuerteventura, affiliated with the Canary Islands Government's Health Department, marked World Ostomy Day this Friday. Under the slogan ‘Visibility, Strength, and Life’, the event facilitated the exchange of experiences among healthcare professionals, ostomized individuals, and their families regarding the adaptation process and associated care.
The conference, organized by the Ostomy clinic team and the island network of the BPSO® program, included participation from professionals and collaborators such as the Canary Islands Patient School and the Canary Islands Ostomy Association (AOCAN). Key aspects discussed included stoma care, adapting to the new situation, and healthcare and psychosocial support.
Since its launch in February 2023, the hospital's specialized Ostomy Nursing clinic has attended to 145 patients and recorded 964 consultations. It provides individualized follow-up and advice for managing devices and preventing complications.
The Fuerteventura Health Services Management has been part of the BPSO® program since 2022 and was designated a Center Committed to Excellence in Care in 2025. Additionally, the hospital now features an adapted bathroom for ostomized individuals at its main entrance, ensuring accessibility, hygiene, comfort, and privacy for changing and emptying collection bags.
