The Fuerteventura Health Services Management, under the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Canarian Foundation Pequeño Valiente have formalized a collaboration agreement to implement various support actions for pediatric patients, their families, and the professionals of the Fuerteventura General Hospital. This agreement, with an initial duration of two years and the possibility of continuation, aligns with the center's healthcare humanization strategy.
The signing ceremony was attended by the hospital's manager, Alejandro Miguens, and the Foundation's president, José Juan Jerez, along with other healthcare and foundation representatives, such as the Director of the Fuerteventura Health Area, Tomás Pérez, and the Nursing Director, María Soledad Iglesias.
Key initiatives include socio-educational activities on the pediatric hospitalization ward, designed to make the stay more bearable for minors, especially those undergoing oncohematological treatment and other pathologies. The Foundation will also participate in the center's humanization programs and in training healthcare professionals, aiming for a comprehensive improvement in care quality.
These types of actions are crucial in pediatric hospitalization, addressing the emotional and psychosocial dimensions that affect both the child and their family. Collaboration with the Canarian Foundation Pequeño Valiente allows the hospital to expand its response capacity in these areas.
The agreement also includes specific support for families residing in Fuerteventura whose children require treatment outside the island. The Hospital Social Work Service will identify these situations for the Foundation to provide support with accommodation, psychosocial accompaniment, and guidance on health-related procedures, in coordination with the Canarian Health Service.
This aspect of the agreement addresses the common need in peripheral island territories to travel for specialized treatments, an additional burden that the agreement seeks to alleviate through coordinated action.
To ensure proper implementation, a technical follow-up committee will be established to coordinate and periodically evaluate the collaboration, ensuring that initiatives effectively meet the detected needs.
Furthermore, at least one annual session on the volunteer program will be organized for the involved healthcare teams, aiming to encourage staff participation and expand the support network for pediatric patients and their families.
