Coinciding with the commemoration of World Alzheimer's Day on September 21st, an awareness campaign has been launched to bring the reality of this disease to the streets and foster greater social consciousness. The initiative, promoted by the collective Marikas Rurales, is supported by Global, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria (through the Canary Islands Transport Authority - AUTGC), and the Ingenio City Council.
A Global bus now features the slogan «Today you are my favorite memory», a message designed to capture public attention and focus on individuals living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, as well as their caregivers.
Present at the launch event were the Mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín; the Councilor for Mobility and Transport, Óliver Navarro; the Managing Director of AUTGC, Ruymán Santana; Global's General Director, Víctor Quintana; Global's Deputy Director, Saulo Castro; and from Marikas Rurales, its president, Daniel Alemán, and its secretary, Eduardo Manzano.
Mayor Vanesa Martín emphasized the importance of collaboration between administrations, companies, and social groups to disseminate awareness messages. She thanked Marikas Rurales for their work and the training they provide in the municipality, as well as the collaborating entities.
Daniel Alemán, president of Marikas Rurales, explained that the bus initiative is linked to an upcoming conference on dementia and Alzheimer's titled «The Silent Disease», scheduled for November 12th at the Federico García Lorca Cultural Center in Ingenio. Alemán stressed the need to bring information about these diseases to society and provide tools for those affected and their families, advocating for a more "pleasant and kind" process.
Marikas Rurales' activities in Ingenio also include regular Wednesday talks in the Lomo Juan neighborhood. Soon, on September 23rd at 7:00 PM, the talk «Breaking Closets» will be held, focusing on reflection about prejudices and labels.
