The beginning of August brings intense heat to the Canary Islands, with highs already exceeding 38 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The island of Gran Canaria recorded 37.3 ºC in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, while Fuerteventura reached the highest peak with 38.6 ºC in Pájara.
Aemet has activated a red alert for Monday in southern and central areas of Gran Canaria, where values close to 40 ºC are expected. The public is urged to 'take extreme precautions' against this episode described as 'extraordinary'.
Other locations such as El Matorral (San Bartolomé de Tirajana), Tuineje (Gran Tarajal), and Agüimes also registered extreme temperatures on Sunday, exceeding 36 ºC. In contrast, the coolest temperatures were recorded in Izaña (Tenerife) with 19 ºC and Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma) with 20.1 ºC.
The rest of the archipelago will also experience very high temperatures, with active alerts on most islands, except for La Gomera, which will maintain a yellow alert.
The meteorological forecast includes practically clear skies and the presence of high-altitude dust (calima), which could intensify the thermal sensation.
