The Department of Primary Sector of the Council of Gran Canaria, through its nursery at the Experimental Agricultural Farm, will distribute these saplings to promote vineyard cultivation sustainability, preserve Canarian varietal heritage, and foster the modernization of winegrowing operations.
The saplings, which come with sanitary and varietal guarantees, are of four varieties: listán negro, negramoll, tintilla, and vijariego blanco. The objective is to facilitate the renewal of aging vineyards or those affected by viruses, as well as the establishment of new vineyards.
The initiative is aimed at individuals or legal entities who own or lease an agricultural holding in Gran Canaria. Allocation will be based on competitive bidding, evaluating applications according to criteria such as the size of the new plantation (priority for plots over 10,000 square meters), membership in the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Vinos de Gran Canaria, and availability of irrigation systems.
Beneficiaries must collect the saplings within 10 business days after the resolution is published and commit to planting them within three months, maintaining the subsidized activity for at least three years, and allowing inspections by the Department until October 2027.
The nursery at the Experimental Agricultural Farm is the only standardized nursery for the reproduction and commercialization of grapevine plant material in the Canary Islands, registered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This accreditation, the result of over 30 years of technical work, is necessary for the distribution of plant material.
