The Island Institute of Sports of the Cabildo has initiated the tender process for the renovation and expansion of the Gran Canaria Stadium, with a budget of 174.71 million euros and an execution period of 36 months.

The project, named 'La Nube' (The Cloud), aims to increase the capacity of the sports venue in Siete Palmas from 32,418 to 44,484 spectators. Furthermore, it will be transformed into a multifunctional space, incorporating dining areas, conference rooms, and a sports innovation hub to ensure its continuous use.
This expansion is crucial for the island to host the 2030 Football World Cup, requiring the works to be completed by July 2029. The estimated three-year execution period, which should begin next July, presents a challenge, as the deadline for receiving offers is July 7.
The awarding process will consider the offered budget (45 points), project quality (25 points), introduced improvements (20 points), and execution timeline (10 points), with the reduction of the latter being a factor.
The renovation includes a new wrap-around stand to optimize natural light and passive ventilation. The roof will feature a lightweight radial structure, supported by a compression ring and 44 pillars, and will integrate moisture capture systems, photovoltaic panels, and rainwater harvesting.
The intervention is planned in phases to allow for partial use of the stadium during construction, balancing sports activities with building work.
Regarding mobility, the parking system will be reorganized, reaching 597 spaces (expandable to 623), and will connect to an adjacent parking facility with at least 3,500 spaces for large events. Stadium access points will be expanded with new plazas and connections across different stands and areas.
For the future management of the venue, the Cabildo and Unión Deportiva de Las Palmas have signed an agreement, pending development, through which the sports entity will contribute 60 million euros to the renovation.
