Eyenga, who played under García at Baloncesto Fuenlabrada during the 2017-2018 season, recalled a historic campaign that culminated in the team's qualification for the Copa del Rey as a seeded team. Despite a quarter-final loss to Luis Casimiro's squad, the Congolese forward holds fond memories of his time with the Argentine coach.
Under García's guidance, Eyenga averaged 12 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 11.2 efficiency credits in 33 games during the regular season of the top national competition, playing an average of 27 minutes per game. His shooting percentages were 46.7% on two-point shots, 36.8% on three-pointers, and 66.3% on free throws.
“"With 'Che' it went very well. The truth is that he is a very cheerful person and he will bring a lot of positivity. He is a motivational coach who makes you believe in everything, he makes you believe that you are amazing and that you can beat any team in the world."
The current forward for Fos Provence Basket in France, aged 36, also emphasized García's ability to foster camaraderie and team cohesion. "Also, he builds companionship and makes you a team. The truth is that Gran Canaria will have a good time with him. As a person, I got along very well with him and I wish him good luck," added Eyenga, who wore the Baloncesto Fuenlabrada jersey for six seasons, from 2017 to 2023.
Néstor 'Che' García, who also coaches the Dominican Republic national team, has taken on the challenge of leading Dreamland Gran Canaria after Jaka Lakovic's departure. His mission is to reverse the team's poor run, which includes 11 losses in the last 12 league games, and secure their stay in the top division during the remaining nine league fixtures.
