The municipality of Gáldar, on the island of Gran Canaria, has taken a significant step towards facilitating access to affordable housing by promoting 63 new public homes in the town of Sardina. The project will be developed in the Lomo de la Cal area, a plot previously acquired by the council with the aim of dedicating it to protected housing.
The initiative will receive a financial contribution of close to 600,000 euros from the Consortium of Housing of the Gran Canaria Island Council. The Gáldar City Council will supplement this funding with 40,000 euros from its own funds for the urbanization of the plot.
The mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, has indicated that this project will follow a similar model to the 52 homes currently under construction in El Roque. As he explained, the City Council is responsible for acquiring and transferring the land free of charge, the Island Council finances the urbanization works, and subsequently, the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), will carry out the construction of the properties. The main objective is to make these homes available to vulnerable families in the municipality.
The Councilor for Housing, Eleazar Rodríguez, recalled that the 52 homes in El Roque must be under construction before the end of this year. Additionally, the adjudication of seven homes in Caideros is planned before next July.
Furthermore, the City Council has expanded its available land for future residential projects and public facilities. It recently acquired nearly 70,000 square meters of plots belonging to Sareb, in a transaction valued at 163,000 euros. These lands, located in Paseo de Los Guanartemes and Playa Canaria, could be used not only for residential developments but also for public facilities and parking areas.
