The Gran Canaria Council, through the Insular Institute of Sports (IID), will cover the cost of mandatory sports insurance for athletes under 16 years old on the island.

This measure, unprecedented in the Canary archipelago, will directly benefit the families of over 40,000 young athletes. The initiative, presented this Friday, allocates a specific budget of 1.5 million euros to cover the cost of sports mutualities.
The public body will cover the mandatory sports insurance included in federation licenses. The aim is to ensure that families of minors participating in sports on the island do not have to bear this expense. This agreement is the result of joint work initiated months ago, with key meetings held in Madrid on January 23rd.
The President of the Council, Antonio Morales, emphasized that support for grassroots sports is a priority in island policies, aiming to ensure that no child or young person is excluded from sports participation due to economic reasons. "We defend grassroots sports. It is our great goal," he stated.
For his part, the Sports Counselor, Aridany Romero, highlighted that this aid to families complements the support that sports clubs already receive for each minor athlete. "Now it's time to extend the Council's aid to families, who will see the cost of the license they currently pay reduced," he noted.
Romero added that this action represents a significant step forward in the protection of minor athletes and those involved in their development. The measure seeks to alleviate the financial burden on thousands of Gran Canarian families and reinforce the commitment to equal opportunities in accessing sports.
The counselor also announced the IID's willingness to increase the budget if necessary after conducting corresponding calculations, adding health as a new focus to the aid.
This line of aid consolidates the IID's investment in sports support and promotion programs, which exceeds 7.1 million euros during the 2026 fiscal year, expanding the types of aid to ensure no minor's sports participation is limited by financial constraints.
