Security for the imminent visit of Pope Leo XIV to Gran Canaria and Tenerife will be significantly intensified in the 24 hours prior to his arrival. The General Commissioner of Citizen Security of the National Police, Francisco López Gordo, has announced that 100% of operational capabilities will be activated, including the closure and sealing of venues where events will take place.
In total, nearly 3,000 officers from the National Police will ensure security during the papal visit. On Gran Canaria, 1,650 officers will be deployed, with 1,100 of them being reinforcements from the mainland, supported by approximately 200 vehicles. In Tenerife, 810 officers will be mobilized, combining 550 from the mainland and 250 transferred from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in addition to the 500 from the provincial police station in Santa Cruz.
On the island of Gran Canaria, around a thousand officers will be responsible for the Pope's motorcade security, access controls, metal detectors, and scanners. In the vicinity of Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, there will be approximately 300 police officers from six operational groups, in addition to special units such as canine handlers, search teams, and explosives specialists. Around 200 officials are expected to manage access points using detectors and scanners.
Commissioner López Gordo warned that access will not be permitted to public spaces with metals or other prohibited items. Security will be complemented by the use of drones and anti-drone systems. In the area of the Estadio de Gran Canaria, almost all intervention units, about 15 operational groups, will be deployed, along with special units to ensure the security of both access and evacuation of all attendees.
The police deployment includes technical personnel, video surveillance system integration, telecommunications, aerial means (helicopters, drones, and anti-drones), as well as tactical units (GEO or GOES), public order units (UIP), immediate protection of the Pope (Special Protection Central Unit), citizen security, intelligence, and judicial police.
