The School of Art and Superior Design of Gran Canaria celebrates a quarter-century in its current headquarters in the island's capital, a space that came to fruition thanks to the mobilization of its educational community. The center hosts 900 students and has a staff of 147 teachers, figures that demonstrate its growing relevance in the Canarian educational system and the high demand for these programs, according to a statement from the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Education.
To mark the anniversary, the Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, visited the facilities this Monday. Accompanied by the center's director, Marta Delgado, he toured specialized classrooms and workshops to gain insight into the educational projects and the needs of students and faculty, recognizing the school as "one of the reference institutions for artistic education in the Canary Islands".
Suárez highlighted the school's role as "an example of how public education can become a gateway to employment and professional development." He emphasized its contribution to sectors with growing economic weight, such as the film industry, and the training of "highly qualified profiles" in design, audiovisual communication, and fashion, professionals who "today build their careers both within and outside the Canary Islands".
Although the current headquarters are celebrating 25 years, the School's history spans over half a century. During this time, it has established itself as "a strategic institution for training professionals linked to the knowledge economy and the cultural and creative industries of the Canary Islands." Its offerings range from the Baccalaureate in Arts to Higher Artistic Design Studies in Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Fashion, as well as vocational training cycles in Plastic Arts and Design.
The school's close relationship with the cultural and creative sphere of the islands is evident in projects such as Territorio CAAM, collaboration with Gran Canaria Moda Cálida, the PLOOP Festival, and La Escuela Sonora, initiatives that enrich students' academic training with professional experiences.
