The Ministry of Labor and Social Economy has issued a circular formally advising companies to enhance remote work. This measure seeks to mitigate the anticipated traffic circulation difficulties and road restrictions that will be implemented in Gran Canaria (June 11) and Tenerife (June 12), as well as in Madrid and Catalonia, during the events scheduled for the pontiff's visit.
The primary goal of this suggestion is twofold: to protect the physical integrity of employees by reducing unnecessary travel and to ensure that the archipelago's business sector and essential services continue to operate without significant disruption during the papal agenda.
The ministerial document outlines guidelines for companies and self-employed individuals on the islands, requesting an analysis of which positions are technically suitable for home-based work. It urges prioritizing remote work if local authorities decree road closures or significant diversions, provided adequate IT tools are available.
Furthermore, the Ministry emphasizes the importance of prevention, urging early coordination of work schedules and organizational dynamics. This is to ensure the transition to digital environments is conducted by mutual agreement and voluntarily, minimizing improvisation as official restrictions on vehicle and pedestrian mobility commence.
This request is based on Article 37.3 g of the Workers' Statute, which allows for the adaptation of working hours and remote service provision in the face of contingencies preventing normal travel to the workplace. Any temporary remote work agreement adopted for these large-scale events must strictly adhere to the training, economic, and material rights stipulated in Law 10/2021, of July 9, on remote work.
