The Canary Islands executive will support the creation of a new Court of Instance in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana. This was communicated this Monday by President Fernando Clavijo to Mayor Francisco García during a meeting held at the presidency headquarters, which was also attended by Justice Minister Nieves Leidi Barreto.
Mayor Francisco García had requested this meeting to convey the City Council's "historic demand" to the Canarian president, highlighting the opportunity presented by the inclusion of this new court in the Organic Law on the Efficiency of Public Justice Services, approved in January of last year.
The City Council already has a plot of public land in the municipality that could be ceded to the government for the construction of the Court of Instance. Following the meeting, Mayor Francisco García expressed his satisfaction with the president's commitment to "continue working along the same lines to achieve this judicial district in our municipality".
The Organic Law on the Efficiency of Public Justice Services, published in January 2025, stipulates that the new court will have a Single Section, covering Civil and Instruction matters, and will also include Violence Against Women. In May of last year, Minister Nieves Leidi Barreto informed the mayor that the Ministry had communicated to the government that it had no plans to create new bodies. However, in Monday's meeting, President Fernando Clavijo reaffirmed the Canary Islands executive's support for this historic demand.
