A cargo ship heading to Gran Canaria was intercepted by the Swedish Coast Guard after being detected dumping coal waste into the Baltic Sea, prompting a preliminary investigation.

The Swedish Coast Guard has intercepted a Russian-origin cargo ship sailing under a Panamanian flag, en route to Gran Canaria. The operation took place this Sunday, April 12, 2026, due to suspicions that the vessel was illegally discharging waste into the Baltic Sea.
The detection of the ship, identified as the 'Hui Yuan', occurred the previous day through images captured from an aircraft. These visual proofs indicated that the cargo ship was dumping coal waste into the water, an action that violates current environmental regulations.

"We are acting to increase maritime safety and protect the environment. If there is a suspicious ship, we intervene."

Daniel Stenling · Vice President of the Coast Guard's Operations Department
By order of the Swedish prosecutor's office, the boarding took place at 8:00 local time (6:00 GMT) near the city of Ystad, on Sweden's southern coast. A preliminary investigation has been launched, and the crew of the 'Hui Yuan' will be interrogated.
Although the cargo ship was transporting coal, the Swedish public broadcaster SVT has linked this operation to recent actions against the so-called “Russian ghost fleet,” used to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil imposed after the war in Ukraine. Swedish authorities aim to minimize tolerance for any infractions committed by vessels linked to Russia in the Baltic Sea.
