The Oceanic Platform of Canarias (PLOCAN) hosted a visit from a group representing UWC Spain, who are developing the second edition of «Energía Joven» in collaboration with the DISA Foundation. This summer educational program is aimed at 30 young people aged 14 and 15 from across the eight Canary Islands.
Participants had the opportunity to discover firsthand how ocean observation technologies and marine renewable energies are transforming the understanding and utilization of the sea. The initiative, fully funded by scholarships and non-profit, aims to train future change agents in sustainability, science, and social leadership, ensuring equal opportunities.
During the visit, the group—comprising 30 students and 7 educators—observed how the Blue Economy and marine environment conservation are fundamental pillars of sustainability in the Canary Islands. The session was designed to be interactive, moving away from traditional theoretical lectures.
Following a brief presentation about PLOCAN, the participants embarked on a guided tour of the onshore facilities, with a particular focus on the glider laboratory. They gained first-hand knowledge of these autonomous underwater vehicles used for ocean observation, their technology, and their diverse scientific applications.
The visit concluded with a practical workshop on renewable energies and hydrogen, allowing the young attendees to engage directly with energy solutions poised to drive the transition towards a more sustainable model. This collaboration underscores PLOCAN's commitment to scientific outreach and the education of new generations.
