The Government of the Canary Islands has authorized a credit transfer of 80,000 euros to the Cabildo of Gran Canaria for the drafting of a modernization project for the irrigation system in La Aldea de San Nicolás.

The Governing Council approved last Monday, October 5th, the authorization for the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty to make a credit transfer. This allocation, amounting to 80,000 euros, will be used for investments aimed at improving agricultural infrastructure for the island councils.
This measure will allow for a direct subsidy, granted exceptionally for public interest reasons, to the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. The purpose is to finance the drafting of a project focused on modernizing the irrigation system within the basin of La Aldea de San Nicolás.
This action seeks to address the current deterioration of the water distribution infrastructure belonging to the Irrigation Community of La Aldea. An incident in March 2026, when rains from Storm Therese caused a collapse of approximately 40 meters of the Parralillo Canal in the Pino Gordo area, interrupted water transport from the Parralillo and Siberio dams. The only available irrigation alternative became the Caidero de la Niña dam, whose canal also shows deficiencies, particularly in the section known as Salto del Perro.
The project's drafting is the first step towards the comprehensive modernization of the water distribution network. It includes the piping of the Parralillo and Caidero canals, the installation of filtering and remote control systems, and connection with existing distribution points. This initiative will benefit an area of 535.43 hectares of cultivation and aims to modernize a network that currently has one hundred distribution points.
The estimated total investment for the execution of the works amounts to approximately 11.5 million euros. The budget for the project's drafting is 129,149 euros. The transfer authorized by the Government will help finance this initial phase of planning and technical definition of the necessary works.
