The long-standing demand to rescue San Marcos Beach took to the streets again this Saturday. Dozens of residents from Icod de los Vinos gathered at the doors of the Canary Islands Government headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to demand immediate and definitive solutions to the administrative paralysis affecting the coastal environment recovery project.
Under the strong premise of “there is no natural disaster, there is institutional abandonment,” the protesters, convened by the citizen platform SOS Playa de San Marcos, traveled from the north of the island to make their voices heard in the capital. During the protest, resident discontent was evident with unanimous chants directed at the regional president: “Clavijo, listen, Icod is fighting.“
The platform's spokesperson, Beatriz Acosta Sáez, had previously warned of the urgency of the mobilization. Today's demonstration follows in the wake of the large “blue tides” that took to the streets in 2014 and 2015. Although the collective has been fighting for over 12 years and a construction project drafted by Gestur was approved in 2023 — with the endorsement of the General Directorate of Coasts and the Sea of the Government of Spain — the work remains completely paralyzed.
