The Island Directorate of the General State Administration in La Gomera hosted last Tuesday, July 21, the official presentation ceremony for the 27 new civil guards assigned to the island. Of these, 13 are permanent officers and 14 are trainees. The reinforcement is distributed with ten for San Sebastián, one for Agulo and Hermigua, six for Valle Gran Rey, six for Alajeró, and two for Vallehermoso. With these new additions, the total staff on the island rises to 82 agents.
According to a press release sent by the Island Directorate, 'in case of need, posts with fewer personnel are supported by others.' This increase in personnel is seen as an indicator of the commitment to improving the quality and effectiveness of security services, optimizing human resources.
The main objective of this reinforcement is to maintain the downward trend in the crime rate of La Gomera. In the first quarter of 2026, this rate stood at 23.6, representing a 0.5% drop compared to the same period in 2025 and a 7.4% decrease compared to 2024. The Gomera index is significantly low when compared to the average for the Canary Islands (49) and the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (48.8). The note states that 'this fact is not coincidental; the civic nature and character of the citizens, along with the good work of the agents, contribute to it'.
The ceremony was presided over by the Island Director, Juan Luis Navarro Mesa. The civil guards were accompanied by their superior officer, Brigadier Justo Cascales, current interim head of the 5th Company. A broad representation from institutions, professional sectors, organizations, and democratically elected citizen representatives was in attendance.
