The highest representative of the "Isla Colombina" highlighted that the Pontiff's presence in the archipelago, following his visit to Gran Canaria and the celebration of the Eucharist in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has left a "message for all citizens of the world." This message focuses on humanity, cooperation, and the dignified treatment of those forced to emigrate due to various needs.
"All citizens of the world, let us take good note, let us not overlook the reflections made in these days, because in that way we can all build a better society," stated the insular president. He insisted that the Pope's words should serve as a collective call to responsibility, empathy, and institutional action.
Curbelo emphasized the special relevance of this visit for the Canary Islands, a territory situated on the front line of the Atlantic migratory route. He recalled that the Archipelago is experiencing an "extraordinarily important" reality linked to the arrival of migrants, which demands coordinated, sensitive, and effective responses from Europe, Spain, and the Canarian institutions.
The president noted that this day coincides with the beginning in Europe of a new phase of debate and work on the migratory response, a demand long advocated from the Canary Islands. "We have always demanded exquisite treatment for the Atlantic route, as well as cooperation from our country and the Canary Islands," he pointed out.
He also referred to the participation of La Gomera in this event, with over 200 residents accompanying the Mass in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He highlighted the presence of Diego Chinea as the person responsible for making a unique offering representing the Island.
For Curbelo, the visit of Pope Leo XIV transcends the religious sphere, acquiring an ethical and institutional dimension. "It speaks to us of humanity, of solidarity, and of how we should be from a human perspective in our treatment of those who have to emigrate," he expressed.
Finally, he argued that the reflections made during the visit should remain in public consciousness and guide political and social decisions. "It has been a visit with historic projection from the perspective of institutional cooperation and the management of the migratory phenomenon for the Canary Islands," he stressed.
