The opposition group in the Cabildo de La Gomera has voiced concerns regarding the slow progress in building official protection housing on the island, despite repeated investment announcements.

The political party criticizes that, despite numerous news reports and communiqués about millions of euros being invested in purchasing used homes or land for construction, the public company Visocan, under the Government of the Canary Islands, has yet to deliver these residences.

"It has been announced that a total of 149 official protection homes will be made available to the people of La Gomera with an investment of 22.8 million euros, but the truth is we have not seen them yet."

It is recalled that an initial agreement signed in 2020 between the Cabildo gomero and Visocan, with a budget of four million euros, did not result in the construction of any housing. Subsequently, in 2022, another collaboration agreement was established under the name “Protected Housing Park for Rent”.
This latter agreement aimed to facilitate housing access for population sectors facing difficulties in entering the real estate market, envisioning the purchase of land and second-hand homes for subsequent construction. However, as of 2026, no homes have been delivered.

"The reality is that the more than 200 homes built years ago were under the socialist government, and they were delivered at that time. However, currently, on this island, six years after the Gomera Socialist Group took control of Visocan, not a single key to a home has been delivered in La Gomera."

The group concludes that, despite media announcements portraying housing policy as a significant focus of current policies, the reality on the ground is different.
